"What defines a good leader? Enabling others to step into the unseen." - Beau Lotto
Leaders drive ahead; whereas managers are the basic "good soldier".
Leaders create things that didn't exist before - giving people a vision of something that can (and will) happen. Managers execute the vision.
Leaders inspire and motivate. Managers maintain and give orders.
Did you know that (per The Corporate Executive Board) in today's organizations it takes an average of 5.4 managers to reach a consensus on a decision?! All because of conflicting goals, motivations and perspectives - making it quite the challenge to finalize anything. WHOA
So are you a leader or a manager?
Are you maintaining status quo? Or do you find status quo completely unacceptable? Are you confused, dismissive and/or ill-equipped to create compelling visions for your company or teams? You're not alone. More people are managers than leaders - even if they call themselves leaders.
So what do you need to be a truly successful leader?
Vision drives everything. It's the essential ingredient for successful leadership, right? Unless you have a clear picture of where you want your organization to go, no one will follow you. If your vision is compelling, people will do whatever it takes to apply their best thinking and efforts to make your vision a reality, regardless of the obstacles that come ahead.
Regardless of whether we think so or not, our teams want something that requires innovation and inspires their imaginations. Are you afraid you aren't equipped to create and cast a compelling vision?
Creating and casting a vision can be hard - yes! But I want you to know that you don't have to have all the answers. I know that can be hard for some of us to swallow, but it's true.
What we do need is a vision that propels the trajectory of your company and team - one that delights your customers and energizes employees.
Vision is painting a picture of an absolutely stunning future. You got this!
So, are you a manager or a leader? Perhaps you are a manager desiring to become a leader. Or you want to become a leader with a vision. Either way, I want you to know that if you don't start casting a vision now for your organization and/or team, it's only a matter of time before strategic failures rob you of your future.
"A leader has the vision and conviction that a dream can be achieved. He inspires the power and energy to get it done." - Ralph Lauren
